HIJABI OF THE WEEK: MAKEUPBYHANSS

Hani Sidow
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO MAKEUP?

I love how it enhances someone’s features – it doesn’t really change you but it just brings out the better version of yourself. Also, experimenting with it can be fun; I use to watch YouTube videos, and BeautyByJJ was one of my favourite Youtubers of all time. Her transformations were amazing and I always thought “wow, I want to be like her”, so I started to experiment with my own makeup.

WHEN DID YOU START WEARING MAKE UP?

I started wearing makeup when I was around Sixteen, but I never use to wear face makeup
until I was in Sixth Form – so around 17/18 – that’s when I started to wear foundation,
eyeliner and mascara. However, it was just until I started my first year of Uni that I started
wearing the concealers, the powders, contour, blusher, basically a full face! Every year I add
something new to the make up I am wearing.

CAN YOU TELL ME SOME OF YOUR STRENGTHS THAT REALLY HELPED YOU IN BLOGGING?

I think because I’m typically a chatty person, blogging just feels like I’m having a
conversation. Being a bubbly personality made it easier for me to get down and just write
down my thoughts. Also, I don’t like not knowing things, so when it came to WordPress, I
would always try to improve on the appearance of my blog; for example, how to change a
certain font, or how to import a photo, that helped me keep on track.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BLOGGING STYLE?

In terms of physical layout, I recently just started to manage a theme on my blog. Before, it
was quite messy, I would have random pictures everywhere. But now I’ve decided to
maintain a themed layout. For example, 3 photos of makeup details, 3 photos of product
details, and now I’m thinking of incorporating 3 fashion posts in there as well.

WHAT TYPE OF NETWORKING DO YOU THINK IS BETTER TO ENHANCE YOUR TRAFFIC TO THE BLOG?

When I first started my blog it was on WordPress, and didn’t get that much traffic. But once
I started Instagram, I noticed things go viral a lot quicker, so even a photo could end up
being on the Explore page and could be seen by a potential Sponsor. However, the problem
with Instagram is that pictures don’t circulate as quickly as videos do, so if you really
wanted to go viral, videos are important. I recently launched my Youtube Channel, and I
noticed the first video I posted received a lot more traffic compared to when I first started
 my Instagram account.

IS THERE ANYONE THAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

I have always enjoyed stalking bloggers on Instagram and seeing what they post. Even before I purchase something, I like to read reviews on it before. In terms of blogging, initially it was part of my Media Production Module for my class and I had to create a blog using Wordpress, after the module I got really in to it. My friend Chloe started her blog before me and I was really motivated to start one myself. She’s always told me to “go for it” so one day I listened and decided to give it a go. I thought there was no one that looked like me at time when I started (2 years ago).  There aren't many Somali, hijabi beauty bloggers back then, so i thought it would be something cool and different.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? (YOU WERE FEATURED ON BUZZFEED AND OTHER PLATFORMS)

I would say my proudest achievement is being recognised by some of my favourite brands
eg. HudaBeauty and Sigma. Also, being featured in Magazines that I read all the time like,
GlamourMag, Allure, Buzzfeed, LOOK etc. So yeah, being recognised in a way that makes you
feel proud of yourself is my proudest achievement.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE AN ESTABLISHED INSTAGRAM PERSONALITY?

Sometimes on Snapchat I get questions from people before they buy a product, they would
ask me about it and I give them my honest opinion. I think it’s nice that someone trusts my
judgement and is willing to make a purchase based on what I think. I love being open and
honest with them, it’s a little community. Instagram is basically my second family.

WHAT THE PROS AND CONS OF HAVING A LARGE FOLLOWING?

Before I started I thought I would receive so many negative comments, because the internet
can be mean, there are some horrible people out there and putting yourself out there means
people will judge you and have something to say. But I’ve never actually experienced real
hate or anyone making me feel bad in any way. Honestly, I’ve met some amazing people on
Instagram and they lift up my mood. So I guess the PROs of having a large following is that if
you have a question, someone is always able to answer, I think that’s really nice.

HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF TO KEEP THE BLOG UP

       AND RUNNING?

On my Instagram, there’s a feature which allows you to see the Insights, so I can see the
impressions for the week, how many followers I’ve reached and it motivates me to see
those numbers increase. However, when the numbers go down and I lose engagements and
impressions, I do feel down about it. I would then post more and engage more to keep the
numbers up. So, to answer your questions, keeping up with the numbers motivates me to
keep the consistency.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THE YOUNG GIRLS THAT LOOK UP TO YOU AND WANT TO GET INTO THE WORLD OF BLOGGING?

Honestly, if it’s something you want to do, go for it. If you’re passionate about something,
don’t let anything stop you. At the end of the day, if we all did things based on what others
think, none of us would get anywhere, so do it for yourself. Also, the world of blogging is
actually really friendly, there are some amazing people out there.

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO YOUNG GIRLS SUFFERING FROM BODY IMAGE AND INSECURITIES WHAT IT BE? SOCIETY’S BEAUTY STANDARDS ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE UNREALISTIC AND THERE ISN’T ENOUGH ROLE MODELS THAT PROMOTE ‘SELF LOVE’, WHAT’S YOUR TAKE IN THIS? WHAT IS BEAUTY TO YOU?

I think Natural Beauty is something that is always ignored. We have to realise that
Instagram is a portrayal of the best version of yourself. No one will post a photo of their
“real self”, there’s always editing involved. Even me, if  I have a pimple, I will edit it out of
the photo. There is nothing on Instagram that is 100% real, it’s all artificial  to an extent, so
don’t look up to “Instagram Models”. Be confident & comfortable in the body that you are in,
and when you wear make up, try to enhance your features rather than changing yourself
into something you’re not.

AND FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE FROM BEAUTY BLOGGERS (OR BLOGGERS) IN THE NEXT 5-10 YEARS?

In the next 5-10 years, I would like to see bloggers go outside their comfort zone and try
different things. There are so many bloggers than just stick to one thing and are afraid to go
outside their comfort zone. I would like to see more of bloggers experiencing with different
stuff and showing a wide range of variety.
